Artist Statement

A lot of my work that I’ve produced over the past few years have been centered on how identity is established through family. I’ve always captured how I’m influenced by my family, but lately I’ve become heavily entranced by my youngest nephew and the recurring impressions left on him. He is at a stage where his individuality is in flux, and I wanted to explore and document these transitions. My final project consists of a body of work that follows the journey of watching him evolve. With my influence and perspective as his Aunt, this work explores boyhood through portraits, objects, and familiar spaces. Below is a letter dedicated to him.

Dear Jacob,

More and more every day I see you constantly changing. You’re at a point where everything is happening so fast. Your adult teeth are coming in, you’ve just started elementary school, and so much more. I think that’s what helped to start this project about you. I wanted to document your life and all the transitions you have and will go through. It’s important for you to be able to see and express yourself in a way that you’ll admire. These pictures also serve as a reminder of the moments that we’ve shared together. I hope you like them.

Love,

Toi
